GOODBYE COLUMBUS (1969) 7.00 [D. LARRY PEERCE] 1971-01-01

Entertaining, witty comedy of manners, with Benjamin as disillusioned cynic wooing sophisticated MacGraw. MacGraw has quite the sexiest ass in the business, and Benjamin is funny, but not as appealling as Hoffman in parallel role in "The Graduate". In fact, Benjamin, though amusing, is not always convincing. Very monotonously well-lit film. Too many parallel's to superior "The Graduate" to survive on its own. From novel by Philip Roth. [625]

LADY AND THE TRAMP (1955) 8.00 [D. HAMILTON LUSKE] 1971-01-01

Fine Disney animation and most charming story. Peggy Lee's voice is a winner. [470]

5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T. (1953) 6.00 [D. T.? SEUSS] 1971-01-01

Animated story about child with nightmare about the evil Dr. T, and his piano students in a sort of musical academy hell. [456]

HELLO DOWN THERE (1969) 2.00 [D. JACK ARNOLD] 1971-01-01

Trashy, exploitive, stupid. [427]

ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. (1966) 2.00 [D. DON CHAFFEY] 1971-01-01

Racquel Welch and John Richardson? Robert Borwn? Welch is watchable. [366]

Lock, Stock, and Barrel (1970) 2.00 [D. JERRY THORPE] 1971-01-01

Shallow and pointless, if I recall correctly. Basically, all I remember is the title. [332]

Italian Job (1969) 6.00 [D. PETER COLLINSON] 1971-01-01

Funny, witty film about British robber (Caine) hitting an Italian gold shipment, then sabatoging traffic control so they can escape. The whole feat is master-minded by Noel Coward in an English jail, and becomes a test of national supremecy (even the guards cheer when the robbers escape with the gold). Some nice action sequences and Caine can be funny. [220]

Dog Day Afternoon (1975) 7.00 [D. SIDNEY LUMET] 1971-01-01

Interesting, powerful drama. Well acted. [203]

Brian's Song (1970) 7.00 [D. BUZZ KULIK] 1971-01-01

Moving docudrama about cancer victim Brian Picciolo's friendship with Gayle Sayers. Now seems more than slightly dishonest. [141]

Elmer Gantry (1960) 8.50 [D. RICHARD BROOKS] 1971-01-01

Very good dramatization of corrupt fundamentalist evangelist. Gantry, of course, is a fraud but fellow evangelist Jean Simmons doesn't know and uses him to her own advantage. Lancaster was born for this role. Shirley Jones plays a former girl-friend of Gantry's, who gave herself to him only to be disgraced when they were caught. She is now a prostitute, and, when given the chance, seeks revenge on the hypocrite. How odd and amazing that thirty years after this film was made, we can still end up with Baker, Swaggart, and company-- obviously the wrong people are seeing this film. [56]
